Mobile Notary vs. UPS Store
Which option is right for your documents? A clear comparison of pricing, convenience and certification — so you can choose with confidence.
When you need a document notarized in Massachusetts, the two most common options are walking into a retail location like The UPS Store or scheduling a mobile notary who comes to you. Both are legitimate paths — but they serve very different needs. Here is what to weigh before you go.
UPS Store notary: what to expect
UPS Store notaries are convenient when you happen to be near one, have a single simple document, and can wait. Fees usually run $5–$15 per signature, on par with state notary maximums. But there are limits worth knowing:
- Not every UPS Store keeps a notary on duty — call ahead or you may leave empty-handed.
- Hours follow retail schedules; evenings, Sundays and holidays are rarely covered.
- Most UPS notaries are not NNA Certified Loan Signing Agents, so they cannot handle real estate closings, refinances, HELOCs, seller packages or reverse mortgages.
- You will wait in line behind shipping customers, which slows time-sensitive signings.
- Hospital, nursing home and in-home signings are not available.
Mobile notary: concierge-level service
A mobile notary meets you at your home, office, hospital, care facility or a neutral location like a coffee shop. You pay a travel fee on top of the per-signature state fee — and in exchange you get scheduled appointments, evening and weekend availability, and a notary trained specifically for the documents you are signing.
For anything involving loan signings, estate planning or a signer with limited mobility, a certified mobile notary is almost always the right call. Title companies, lenders and attorneys rely on mobile signing agents for exactly this reason.

When UPS makes sense
A single acknowledgment or jurat on a straightforward personal document, during business hours, with time to wait — that is the sweet spot for a retail notary.
When to choose a mobile notary
- Real estate closings, refinances, HELOCs and seller packages — these require a certified loan signing agent.
- Estate planning documents — wills, trusts, POAs and healthcare directives, often with witnesses.
- Hospital or nursing home signings — where the signer cannot travel.
- After-hours or same-day — closings and time-sensitive documents that cannot wait.
- Multiple signers, multiple documents — one appointment, one location, done right.
